Sizing and Thread Specifications Explained M3 x 0.5
- M3: This indicates a Metric thread with a nominal outer diameter of 3mm. It is a very small thread size, commonly used in electronics, precision hobbies, and small machinery.
- 0.5: This designates a 0.5mm thread pitch, which is the standard distance from the peak of one thread to the next. For an M3 fastener, 0.5mm represents the standard Metric Coarse thread profile.
Physical Design and Fit
- Button Die: Unlike a split die, a button die is a solid, un-split round ring containing integrated internal cutting teeth.
- 1" OD (Outside Diameter): The die itself has an outer diameter of exactly 1 inch. This means it drops directly into any standard 1-inch plain die stock handle or adjustable guide guide. EXCEPT M16 X 2 & M20 X 2.5 WHICH IS 2" OD
Material Properties and Best Use Case
- Carbon Steel: This tool is made from Carbon Alloy Steel rather than High-Speed Steel (HSS). Carbon steel is more brittle and has lower heat resistance, meaning this die is strictly meant for general purpose or DIY use.
- Ideal Workpieces: It is excellent for cutting threads into soft materials like plastics and non-ferrous metals (brass, aluminum, copper), or for "chasing" (cleaning up rusted or cross-threaded burrs) on existing steel fasteners.
- Limitations: It should not be used for cutting fresh threads into hard stainless steel or high-tensile bolts, nor is it intended for precision or structural automotive/safety-critical applications.
