An R-clip (also known as an R-pin, hairpin cotter, hitch pin clip, or spring cotter pin) is a reusable metal wire fastener shaped like the letter "R". They are widely used in mechanical and automotive applications to secure the ends of round shafts, axles, and clevis pins without requiring any tools for installation or removal.
How They Work
An R-clip relies on spring tension to stay locked in place:
- The Straight Leg: This side is pushed directly through a pre-drilled cross-hole in a shaft or pin.
- The Curved Leg: As the straight leg enters the hole, the curved "belly" rides up and snaps over the outside diameter of the round shaft.
- The Angled Tip: The flared opening at the bottom guides the clip smoothly over the shaft during installation.
