Sutton Tools manufactures high-quality Unified National Coarse (UNC) button dies designed for cutting new male/external threads on studs, bolts, and rod stock. They are available in Carbon Steel (for general purpose/DIY use).
Key Features
- Design: Solid round or circular split geometry that fits perfectly into an adjustable guide or plain die stock handle.
- Finish: Bright finish reduces friction when threading non-ferrous metals, plastics, and mild steels.
1/4 (Major Diameter)
- The Size: This represents the nominal outside diameter of the bolt's threaded section.
- The Measurement: It is exactly 1/4 of an inch (which equals 0.250 inches or 6.35 mm).
- The Fit: If you are using a Sutton 1/4" button die, you will start with a raw metal rod that is 1/4" in diameter to cut these threads.
š 20 TPI (Threads Per Inch)
- The Pitch: TPI stands for Threads Per Inch.
- The Count: If you line a ruler up against the bolt, you will count exactly 20 individual thread crests within a one-inch span.
- The Distance: This means the distance from one thread peak to the next (the pitch) is 1/20th of an inch, or 0.050 inches (1.27 mm). Every time you rotate the bolt one full turn, it moves forward by this exact distance
