UNF (Unified National Fine) die nuts are specialized hexagonal threading tools used to restore, clean, or cut external threads in confined or hard-to-reach areas. Because of their hex shape, they can be easily driven with a standard spanner or socket wrench, making them perfect for on-site repairs.
The Thread Specifications (
1/4 X 28 UNF)
- 1/4" (Major Diameter): The nominal outside diameter of the bolt or thread it fits is exactly 1/4 of an inch (6.35 mm).
- 28 (TPI): Stands for Threads Per Inch. This tool is designed for fine threading where there are exactly 28 thread peaks along one inch of the bolt length.
- UNF: Stands for Unified National Fine. This is the standardized imperial thread profile common in automotive, aerospace, and precision mechanical assemblies.
2. The Material (Carbon Steel)
- Tungsten Chrome Alloy Steel: Sutton constructs these from a high-quality carbon alloy steel.
- Intended Use: Carbon steel is ideal for general maintenance, repair work, and DIY use. It performs beautifully on softer materials like mild steel, plastics, and non-ferrous metals (such as brass or aluminum).
- Limitations: Because it is carbon steel rather than High-Speed Steel (HSS), it is not recommended for cutting brand new threads from a blank rod or working on hardened high-tensile bolts.
