Sutton UNF taps are premium industrial-grade threading tools designed for cutting fine Unified National Fine (UNF) internal threads in blind or through holes. Manufactured by Sutton Tools—a prominent Australian-based toolmaker—these taps are widely used across automotive, aerospace, and precision engineering industries where high tensile strength and vibration resistance are required.
Types of Sutton UNF Taps
Sutton manufactures hand and machine taps in this threadform, categorized by their lead:
- Taper Tap: The most gradual lead, ideal for starting the thread easily in an untapped hole.
- Intermediate Tap: Used right after the taper tap to further cut the thread to the proper depth.
- Bottoming Tap: Has a very flat lead used at the very end to cut threads to the absolute bottom of a blind hole.
The Technical Breakdown
- 1/4" (Major Diameter): This is the nominal outside diameter of the thread, measuring 1/4 of an inch (or 6.35 millimeters). It tells you how wide the bolt or the threaded hole is.
- 28 (Threads Per Inch / TPI): This indicates that there are exactly 28 individual thread crests per inch along the length of the bolt.
- UNF (Thread Series): This stands for Unified National Fine. It tells you that the threads are tightly spaced and shallow compared to standard threads.
